The University of Central Arkansas will welcome the Russian National Ballet Theatre’s performance of the popular ballet “Sleeping Beauty” on Tuesday, April 18.
The performance at Reynolds Performance Hall is set for 7:30 p.m.
“The Russian National Ballet Theatre is made up of some of the most talented dancers in the world,” said Amanda Horton, director of Reynolds Performance Hall.
“They have performed at Reynolds in the past, and we're excited about bringing them back for their performance of ‘Sleeping Beauty.’ We hope to attract dance enthusiasts of all ages with this beloved fairy tale.”
The company of 50 ballerinas is on a four-month tour across the United States.
The Russian National Ballet Theatre was started in Moscow in the late 1980s, but “Sleeping Beauty,” choreographed by Marius Petipa to the renowned Tchaikovsky score, has been danced by Russian prima ballerinas since it debuted in 1890. It includes one of the most difficult sequences in all ballets, called the “Rose Adagio.”
“Sleeping Beauty” features familiar fairy tale characters like Princess Aurora, four different princes and 11 fairies in the cast of dancers, but these familiar fairy tale characters make cameos near the end: Puss-in-Boots, Cinderella and her Prince Charming and Little Red Riding Hood with the Wolf.
